Excerpts from an interview with Michael A. Goodman

Interviewer: Is consulting between jobs something you recommend
as part of a job search strategy?
Goodman: As I write in the book, “it depends.” There’s
no single answer that applies to everyone. It’s depends
a lot on the person – his or her skills, experience, and
goals – and the type of consulting that interests the individual.
Certainly consulting is a way to stay current, build additional
skills, and bring in some extra cash while you are looking for
a new job. But there are also some reasons why you might not
want to go down that path. Landing a juicy consulting assignment
isn’t easy. It takes time. And it can really get in the
way of your primary task – finding a new job.
You have to consider the pros and cons on a case by case basis,
and determine whether it’s right for you. And all those
issues are discussed in detail in Rasputin For Hire.
